So you want to determine your skin type but, your are not 100% sure in what category it falls in. Failing to determine your skin type can lead to an improper skincare routine, which can cause skin blemishes like clogged pores, blackheads, and acne breakouts even worse than leaving them alone! Generally, there are 4 skin types that determine what your daily routine should look like, including:
Oily Skin
Sensitive Skin
Dry Skin
Combo Skin
Lets discuss these four and see where you fall now shall we,

Oily Skin
Characteristics:
Produces oils in the -zones & sometimes the cheek area.
Pores are enlarged.
Prone to blackheads and acne.
Feels slick to touch.
Has a shiny appearance.
Oily hair is also a clue to recognising this skin type.
What causes Oily Skin?
Inflammation.
Imbalanced gut.
Over-washing.
Hormonal changes.
Environment.
Poor diet.
How to deal with Oily Skin:
Look for oil free gel-cream formulas.
Avoid ingredients in products such as minerals, oils, petrolatum, alcohol.
Look for Ingredients in products such as salicylic acid, glycolic acid & benzoyl peroxide.
Invest in a good toner.
Always pat your face dry never rub.
Make use of blotting papers throughout the day.

Sensitive Skin
Characteristics:
Reacts negatively to many products, often breaking out or becoming very dry due to these products.
May become red or hot when touched.
May have visible blotchiness/red areas.
May be itchy or irritated.
Tend to be delicated with fine pores.
What causes Sensitive Skin?
Stress.
Environmental factors.
Harsh ingredients in products.
Reactive skin.
Eczema.
Inflammation of the skin.
Imbalanced gut.
Thin skin.
How to deal with Sensitive Skin:
Look for products that maintain and nourish your skin barrier.
Avoid ingredients in products such as glycol, salicylic acid, retinoids, sulfates.
Look for ingredients in products such as Glycerin, hyaluronic acid and shea butters.
Do not rub or scrub you face harshly.
Stick to mild, gentle cleansers not soaps or scrubs to wash your face.

Dry Skin
Characteristics:
Feels tight after washing face
May be flaky or itchy.
Small to visible pores.
Prone to fine lines and wrinkles.
Dull appearance.
May have dry patches.
Dry hands and feet can also be a indication of having dry skin.
What causes Dry Skin?
Inflammation.
Hormones
Exposure to harsh chemicals in products.
Unbalanced skin pH.
Dry air.
Smoking
To much direct sunlight.
How to deal with Dry Skin:
Look for ingredients in products that retains moisture.
Avoid ingredients in products such as harsh acids and alcohol.
Look for ingredients in products such as Glycerin and hyaluronic acid.
Try a humidifier to add more moisture to the air.
Avoid rough scrathy fabrics .
Make use of a moisturiser with SPF in.

Combo Skin
Characteristics:
Dry around cheeks, Oily in t-zones.
Enlarged pores around nose.
Occasional breakouts around t-zone.
Th rest of the face may have smooth, even texture or be noticeably dry.
Red patches on your cheeks.
Dry around your eyes.
What causes Combo Skin?
Over production of oils n some areas of the face.
Stress.
Not exercising enough.
Skin care products are to harsh for your skin.
Genetics.
Hormones.
Environment.
How to deal with Combo Skin:
Look for antioxidants, ceramides and gentle exfoliants.
Avoid ingredients in products such as mineral oil, petrolatum and alcohol.
Look for ingredients in products that are fragrance free.
Try multi layering with skincare products.
Make use of gentle cleansers.
Make use of SPF.
Skin care is an art and a science, but don’t be intimidated: this is something we can all learn. The trick to caring for your skin is knowing your skin because understanding it means you can find the right products that work for you and combat potential issues without causing more problems.
